Penguin safety was paramount for our team. The multi-species penguins were re-located to a safe environment as they are birds, and birds are very sensitive to odours. SureBond had to complete this project as quickly as possible so that the multi families of penguins could be re-located back to their large environment from the smaller, temporary segregation rooms.
SureBond always starts small for safety and quality. We performed a detailed VOC test for a small section of a test floor. As this was no longer a new construction site, but a renovation habitated with birds, we determined from the test that the Zoo should remove and segregated the birds outside our work area when the full installation occurred.
6 months later, we performed the full project prior to Christmas, 2016. On schedule for the busy Christmas season, SureBond provided a beautiful, anti slip industrial floor that was a match to the faux rock esthetics of the Calgary Penguin Exhibit.
Each year, the SureBond Silikal® R61 CQ floor has 2,000,000 patrons. Our SureBond floor remains non slip AND easy to clean. The slip-fall risk exposure to the City of Calgary / Calgary Zoo was effectively eliminated. The floor is intact to this day, despite the de-laminated, severely cracked topping slab from original construction.
There has been no interior cracking of our floor despite the unstable, severely cracked topping slab that was our substrate.
In 2019, SureBond completed a second phase of work installed a visual factory for the automatic door replaceent. We needed to provide a non slip and matching Interior and Exterior flooring on top of a gradient heated slab. The penguins remained in their environment, and were not re-located. This was a major challenge. These floors needed to be of higher anti slip than the interior floor. The permanent safety yellow flooring with crisp lettering technique was created by SureBond specifically for this project. We also safely managed the ventilation during the entire process.
The Visual Factory, non slip and matching Interior and Exterior flooring on top of a gradient heated slab that was only 7 - 10 days old. The project was a great success. This permanent visual factory flooring eliminated peeling, painted lettering for the long term for the Calgary Zoo. Salt will do nothing to damage a Silikal® floor.
And, the floor has received a very positive approval from our Penguin and Calgary Zoo clients.
